Getting There From North America and Europe
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) has direct flights from Amsterdam (AMS) via KLM airlines two times a day and we highly recommend this for any climbers coming from North America or Europe. Getting to Amsterdam from North America is easy as there are several Delta Airlines flights leaving from different cities every day. Going this route ensures you will avoid having to take a small commuter plan or bus to finish off the last leg of your travel to Tanzania. Total travel time will take you anywhere from 17 to 24 hours depending on your city of origin and layover time in AMS.
Getting There From Elsewhere
Most climbers coming from other regions without direct flights to JRO, get to Tanzania by going through Dar Es Salaam (DAR), which is the largest city in Tanzania. From Dar Es Salaam, clients take a regional flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). While some clients fly into Nairobi to save a few dollars, they usually find out that the small amount of money saved is not worth the extra hassle associated with travelling through additional African countries requiring additional visas.
The alternative to flying from DAR to JRO is to take a bus directly to your hotel in Moshi. The upside to this option is the trip is a bit cheaper and you get to witness local customs first hand. The downside is that unless you are used to dealing with locals and routinely spending time in a hostel, this option will not be very comfortable for you and your guests. There is only one early morning bus daily and it will take you around 8 hours to get to your Moshi. You are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime and saving a few dollars on the final leg is just not recommended. You should be focused on the mountain and not on a bumpy and uncomfortable bus ride
There are multiple carriers from DAR to JRO, but we recommend Precision Air as their planes are well maintained and are larger than some other carriers. You will feel more secure that your gear bag will arrive with you on the same plane.
Just before you enter your final approach to JRO, you will get your first glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak out the right side windows of the plane. Your dream is close and you are about to make it happen!
